Observers record detailed information on the gear and fishing activity of the vessels. Observers work on deck on vessels ranging from 30 to 90 on trips roughly ranging from 1 to 45 days collecting data on fish catch and bycatch, and incidental takes such as marine mammals, seabirds and marine turtles. After attending a 3-week paid training in-person training in Galveston, TX observers are deployed from ports throughout the Gulf of Mexico and southern Atlantic states. Gear types assessed include but are not limited to shrimp trawl, bottom longline, modified buoy gear, bandit reel, and handline. Training projected for end of March/ April timeframe.

Accommodations and meal reimbursement during in person session of training are provided.Training includes instructions on sampling protocols, gear, fisheries, fish identification, marine mammal/sea turtle identification, and safety.

This is a challenging job, and candidates must be mentally prepared to be away from home without access to internet or cellular telephone signal for multiple days and often weeks at a time. Candidates must be physically able to handle heavy lifting, working odd hours, and spending long days in rough seas. Many crews speak limited English compounding the effects of loneliness and isolation on long trips. Observing provides an excellent career in marine biology, as observers are widely recognized as being excellent field biologists. A broad range of advancement opportunities are available to those who demonstrate appropriate capabilities. Those opportunities include, but are not limited to, project management, field supervisors, and fieldwork in other programs.

Compensation:Observersstarting pay is $19.33/hour. Dependent on enrollment in our H&amp;W benefit, observers may also be eligible for anadditional $4.57/hourfor the first 40 hours worked on each calendar week for a total of$23.90 hour. This is a fulltime position with benefits.Annually, observers earn between $35K - $55K a year dependent on their availability to deploy offshore and their personal sea day accomplishments. Observers will be paid a minimum of 8 hours for each calendar day offshore and are also eligible for additional compensable activities while on land.

Travel is reimbursedin accordance with federal travel guidelines at an hourly rate along with compensation for miles accrued on a personal vehicle as well as per diem at the specified Government rate.

Minimum Qualifications:

The biologist must be capable of working in temperature extremes for long hours and be able to handle strenuous physical activity and conditions (i.e., hiking for hours a day while carrying equipment). The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a minimum of four years of work in the field of biological consulting/biological field science. A candidate with a Master’s degree can substitute one year of work. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and proven record of working collaboratively in a team environment. A test of practical skills may be given to final candidates. Duties &amp; Responsibilities
<ul>
<li>Conduct general biological reconnaissance surveys, habitat assessments, and general and focused (including protocol) species surveys. Assist with jurisdictional aquatic resources delineations.</li>
<li>Conduct nesting bird surveys and identify nesting and breeding behaviors by sight and sound and monitoring active nests in accordance with species-specific buffer requirements and permit conditions.</li>
<li>Perform biological compliance monitoring during construction.</li>
<li>Work with construction crews and project managers to document compliance levels related to associated project environmental permits, documents, and clearances.</li>
<li>Complete pre-construction surveys and focused resource surveys.</li>
<li>Provide sensitive species and habitat education programs to construction personnel.</li>
<li>Manage personal workload weekly and effectively communicate with environmental compliance managers, senior/project biologists, and/or project managers regarding field observations and any compliance concerns.</li>
<li>Collect data, take photographs, and fill out survey and monitoring forms to be submitted daily.</li>
<li>Assist with data collection, entry, and management.</li>
<li>Must be able to understand and interpret resource agency and regulatory agency permits and documents with compliance requirements.</li>

 Qualifications &amp; Skills
<ul>
<li>Minimum of 3 years in the field of biological consulting/biological field science.</li>
<li>A Bachelor’s degree in Biology (a Master’s degree can substitute for one year of experience).</li>
<li>Experience conducting focused nesting bird surveys and the ability to identify CA bird species and identify breeding/nesting bird behaviors as well as the knowledge to select appropriate protection buffers during compliance monitoring.</li>
<li>Experience with identification of northern CA and central coast California wildlife and plant species is required.</li>
<li>Experience with federal or state listed or otherwise considered sensitive species is preferred.</li>
<li>A Scientific Collecting Permit, CDFW MOU, and/or or USFWS 10a1A permit with Monterey and/or Santa Cruz County species is preferred.</li>
<li>Experience with conducting construction monitoring, environmental compliance, and providing education programs to construction personnel is required.</li>
<li>Familiarity with construction operations and equipment. Ability to identify heavy equipment and describe practices occurring at a job site.</li>
<li>Ability to work collaboratively with construction personnel, the project biologist, environmental compliance manager, and project managers to develop solutions while implementing permit conditions.</li>
<li>Ability to manage personal workload weekly and communicating with project managers and project field schedulers availability for field work.</li>
<li>Proficient use of Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Google Earth, and other related software.</li>
<li>Experience with Survey 123, GPS units/software, ArcGIS, ArcCollector and/or sub-meter field data collection.</li>
