The Public Works Department for the Town of Garner is seeking a self-motivated and service-oriented individual with a positive team-based mindset to join our division as a Streets Maintenance Worker. This individual will be responsible for working as part of a team to maintain and enhance turf, landscaped beds and areas along Town right-of-ways and Town properties through the performance of semi-skilled and skilled labor, the operation of light to medium duty equipment and power tools, application of herbicides and other duties related to the field of Landscape Maintenance as well as the management of snow, ice and litter removal.
Examples of Duties:
- Assisting with right-of-way maintenance work; mowing, edging, trimming, blowing, spraying, pruning, litter removal.
- Operating zero-turn mowers, hedge trimmers, blowers, edgers, string trimmers, UTVs, tractors, loaders.
- Applying herbicides/pesticides to various plant materials on Town and State Right-of-Ways.
- Operating all equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks such as loaders,
dump trucks, tractors, hand tools and mowing machines.
- Adhering to the use of PPE and proper work zone setup as necessary.
- Performing inspections and preventative maintenance on equipment (cleaning, greasing), submitting work orders for equipment maintenance and repair.
- Providing customer service; responding to resident/customer questions and concerns; understanding and staying current on policies and procedures.
- Responding to inclement weather events such as snow/ice removal and storm clean-up.
- Performing related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must:
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- A valid driver's license and good driving record.
- Familiarity with tools, equipment and materials used in grounds maintenance.
- General knowledge of horticulture and landscaping.
- Able to exercise sound decision making, comply with workplace safety regulations, and follow written and oral instructions.
Additional Preferred Skills:
- Experience working outdoors in extreme conditions (heat/cold) in proximity to vehicular traffic.
- Familiarity with MUTCD regulations and guidelines.
- North Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s License.
- Education or coursework in Landscaping or Horticulture.
- A valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (B or A).
Additional Information:
- Participation in emergency response activities and support of Town special events is expected.
- Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
- The salary range shown is the hiring range. The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications.
