Pace Systems is a Naperville-based provider of comprehensive IT, Security, Electrical, Audio-Visual, and Software solutions. For this project we are supporting a large-scale network and infrastructure upgrade for Ingalls Memorial Hospital, integrating its legacy environment with the UChicago Medicine network.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Technical Field Engineer / Writer or Cabling Specialist (RCDD) to create detailed rack-elevation and as-built documentation while assisting with device discovery, migration, and basic troubleshooting across hospital facilities. The role combines hands-on field work with meticulous technical documentation and is ideal for an RCDD-certified cabling professional who is fluent in Visio and structured-cabling best practices.

Schedule: Preference for full-time (40 hrs/week); exact start/end dates to be confirmed (target window ≈ Aug–Nov 2025).

Compensation: $45 per hour (W2).

Duration: Approximately 16 weeks.

Work Environment: On-site in clinical settings; extensive walking between buildings.
Key Responsibilities
Rack Elevation & Documentation (Primary)

Produce front- and rear-elevation diagrams for every telecom room (TR) rack using Visio stencils.

Label rack units (RU), record equipment models, and note names assigned by Network or Ops teams.

Map power feeds, grounding locations, blank panels, patch panels, routers, switches, cable management, and UPS devices.

Post required signage, capture photo images, and generate inventory lists as directed.

Update documentation with final equipment locations after installation; ensure alignment of power, cooling, and cable-management plans.

Coordinate with cable-installer lead for patch-panel mapping (installer owns mapping deliverable).
Field Engineering & Network Upgrade Support

Conduct physical site surveys of communication closets and rooms.

Locate, identify, and document devices (MACs, Jack IDs, connectivity status).

Maintain network data in Excel and annotated PDFs.

Follow predefined checklists to assist with device migrations and validation of wired/wireless endpoints (PCs, printers, medical devices).

Perform basic Layer 2 troubleshooting under guidance of senior network engineers.

Provide daily progress updates and collaborate with project coordinators to meet migration milestones.
Essential Duties

Legacy device discovery and documentation.

Creation of rack-elevation and as-built drawings.

Equipment installation support and cabling validation.

Photo documentation and inventory management.

Daily reporting and schedule coordination.
Required Qualifications
-
Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification or equivalent deep structured-cabling expertise.

Proficient with Microsoft Visio (including TR equipment stencils) and able to produce professional-grade diagrams.

Demonstrated experience creating power, cooling, and cable-management documentation for data/telecom racks.

Strong working knowledge of Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and structured-cabling standards.

Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Adobe Acrobat mark-ups.

Ability to read floor plans and technical schematics.
-
Excellent written communication skills for technical documentation.

Physically able to walk between hospital buildings and climb stairs throughout the shift.
Preferred Qualifications

Prior work in hospital or other clinical environments.

Experience with large-scale network migrations and inventory tracking systems.

Familiarity with enterprise networking tools (e.g., Cisco Discovery Protocol, NetBox).

PPE: Must wear a CDC-approved mask at all times in patient-care areas when required.
