Augustana University invites applications for the position of full‑time Teaching Professor (Non‑Tenure Track) – Director of Athletic Bands & Program Director, Music Education.
Position Summary
An energetic, visionary teacher–leader will direct all athletic bands—Viking Marching Band, Valhalla Brass (hockey), and Basketball Band—and guide the Music Education program. This an 11‑month appointment, and carries a $1,500 annual stipend for Program Director duties in addition to the teaching contract.
Primary ResponsibilitiesAthletic Bands (≈ 50 %)
- Artistic & Administrative Leadership – In coordination with Athletics and community partners: design rehearsals, field shows, and game‑day performances; direct Valhalla Brass and oversee the Basketball Band.
- Recruitment & Retention – Partner with the Assistant Director of Recruitment at the School of Music, and School of Music faculty to attract, retain, and support diverse student musicians.
- Operations & Logistics – Coordinates budgets, inventories, travel, and licensing.
- Community & Visibility – Represent Augustana at campus, community, and regional events.
Teaching & Service (≈ 35 %)
- Teach undergraduate music‑education courses and supervise student‑teaching placements.
- Contribute to faculty governance and School initiatives.
Music Education Program Director (≈ 15 %)
- Curriculum Leadership – Modernize and assess K–12 music‑education curricula.
- Compliance & Accreditation – Align with School of Education certification requirements; assist in NASM reporting.
- Faculty Coordination – Staff and mentor instructors for pedagogy, leadership, and methods courses.
- Strategic Partnership – Collaborate with the School of Music leadership on program innovation.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Music Education, Conducting, or related field (doctorate preferred).
- Significant experience (> 5 years) directing marching/athletic bands and teaching music‑education coursework.
- Proficiency with K–12 curriculum design, assessment, and teacher‑certification processes.
- Interacting with students, faculty, and leadership who bring diverse backgrounds and viewpoints—while demonstrating deep appreciation for academic values and culture—must be a core value of the successful candidate.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate (Ph.D., D.M.A., Ed.D.) in Music Education or Conducting.
- Proven program‑leadership or administrative experience at the university level.
- National recognition for excellence in teaching, ensemble leadership, or music education.
- Facility with technology‑enhanced instruction (e.g., generative AI).
Appointment & Compensation
- Rank: Teaching Professor (Non‑Tenure Track)
- Term: 11‑month renewable contract per university policy
- Salary: Commensurate with experience + $1,500 annual Program Director stipend
