Job Title: Middle School Sports Development Coach

Position Type: School Year (Part-Time, Seasonal)

Schedule: Monday – Friday, After School Hours

Work Location: Whittier / Pico Rivera Area Middle Schools

Reports To: Athletic Coordinator

Classification: Part-Time / Non-Exempt Hours: Up to 20 hours/week; with potential for additional hours supporting club events and site coverage (up to 25 hours/week)

Salary: $18.25 per hour


Position Overview

Boys & Girls Club of Whittier / Pico Rivera is seeking a passionate and dedicated Middle School Sports Development Coach to lead youth sports programming for middle school students. This position involves planning, organizing, and leading structured coaching sessions while creating a safe and positive environment that promotes athletic development, physical fitness, teamwork, and good sportsmanship.


Key Responsibilities

· Support programs at assigned middle school sites, assist students with homework, and foster positive relationships.

· Promote positive behavior through encouragement and reinforcement.

· Plan and implement youth sports programs focused on physical activity, skill development, and healthy lifestyles.

· Collaborate with the Athletic Coordinator to create lesson plans, program schedules, and organize special events.

· Maintain a clean, safe, and engaging environment for youth participants.

· Model and promote positive sportsmanship and respectful behavior at all times.

· Lead developmentally appropriate practice sessions for up to 25 student-athletes.

· Facilitate daily practices that are engaging, inclusive, and safe.

· Follow all organizational policies and procedures as directed by the Athletic Coordinator.

· Actively participate in site activities and help build a positive club culture.

· Attend all required staff training, meetings, and development opportunities.

· Work collaboratively with other coaches and staff to strengthen the athletic program.

· Provide consistent supervision and prioritize the safety and well-being of all youth.

· Serve as a positive role model, helping youth navigate challenges and develop conflict resolution skills.

· Assist with game-day setup, including equipment and field or court readiness.

· Supervise athletes during games and ensure a safe, organized environment.

· Coach with a focus on effort, growth, and sportsmanship while following league guidelines.



Qualifications

· Experience working with youth in educational, sports, or afterschool settings.

· Background or interest in coaching youth sports (preferred).

· Strong communication skills and ability to engage with middle school-aged youth.

· Positive interpersonal skills to connect with students, families, and staff.

· CPR & First Aid Certification (required).

· Must successfully complete background checks, drug screening, and TB testing (required prior to hire).

· Valid Driver’s License.

· Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus but not required.

· Completion of Mandated Reporter and Sexual Harassment training (provided upon hire).


Physical Requirements & Work Environment

This position involves a dynamic combination of physical activity and environmental exposure. The Middle School Sports Development Coach must be physically capable of actively engaging in and leading sports and recreational activities in both indoor and outdoor settings.


Physical Requirements:

· Frequently required to stand, walk, run, bend, kneel, crouch, lift, and carry sports equipment and materials (up to 20 pounds).

· Ability to demonstrate athletic movements, including stretching, sprinting, jumping, and other basic sports skills during practices and games.

· Must be able to observe and supervise youth across a large playing area, maintaining visual and auditory awareness of all participants.

· Requires the use of hands and arms to operate sports equipment, set up fields/courts, and assist participants as needed.

· May involve extended periods of standing and movement on hard surfaces such as gym floors, blacktops, and grass fields.

Environmental Conditions:

· Work is conducted in a variety of settings, including school gyms, outdoor fields, blacktops, and community recreation areas.

· Exposure to seasonal weather conditions, including sun, heat, cold, wind, and light rain. Coaches are expected to dress appropriately for all outdoor activities.

· The work environment may be noisy and fast-paced, especially during practices, games, or events with large groups of youth.

· Occasional exposure to dust, dirt, grass, and other outdoor elements while setting up or managing sports equipment.

· May be required to work in non-climate-controlled environments such as outdoor courts or fields for extended periods.

Additional Considerations:

· Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies, including providing basic first aid or relocating youth to a safe area.

· Flexibility is required to accommodate varying site conditions, unexpected changes in weather, and program adjustments.
