Job Summary: Work directly with tenants providing acceptance, friendliness, and compassion. Activity programs are based on the tenant’s interests, strengths, and needs; in an atmosphere of warmth, success, encouragement and job.
Job Relationships:
Reports to: Housing Manager
Interrelationships with: Housing Manager
External Contacts: Visitors, Families, Volunteers, Other outside Activity sources for programs
Hours of Work: As scheduled.
Dress Code: Street clothing appropriate in a business environment
Essential Requirements of Work: Minimum qualifications necessary.
- Education and Training
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Basic activity course (a willingness to take this course)
- Experience: Previous work with the elderly is desirable.
- Personal:
- Attend all on-going activity training
- Good physical and mental health
- Ability to maintain outgoing, cheerful, enthusiastic personality
- Have efficient time management skills
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to work with others in close proximity
- Self-motivated, work independently
- Ability to contribute to a friendly, homelike atmosphere
- Job knowledge:
- Have knowledge of various activities and be familiar with tenant’s limitations
- Musical/performance ability desirable
- Ability to read, write, and follow directions
- Ability to speak clearly, and to make self-understood to tenants of varying abilities
- Ability to think creatively, plan and problem solve
- Ability to prepare, present, and evaluate activity
- Possess good phone etiquette
- Record keeping ability
Physical Demands of the job:
- Occasional lifting weights 10-20 pounds
- Frequent walking, twisting, standing, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling
- Occasional squatting, kneeling, sitting and reaching above the shoulder
Mental Demands of the Job:
- Ability to cope with frequent interruptions
- Ability to vary and adapt activities to tenant ability levels and needs
- Ability to quickly come up with alternative activity plans
- Ability to cope with depressed or lonely people
- Ability to prepare activities with variety, fun, and purpose
- Ability to deal with tenants with dementia

Principal Job Responsibilities:
- Provide personal contact with tenants allowing them to feel successful; that their life has a purpose and to continue to pursue their interests and use their remaining abilities.
Tasks:
- To provide one to one visits; inviting tenants to activities in a way that make them feel welcome
- Creating and maintaining a warm, loving environment
- Use age and mind appropriate interaction in activities
- Use good listening skills
- Explain activities to tenants in a way that encourages involvement, respects their rights and gives choices whenever possible
- Planning, preparing and facilitating activities that meet the tenants mental, physical, emotional, social and community needs.
Tasks:
- Offer activities which are a variety and meet different levels of ability
- Work with the HD in the planning and development of these programs, ever looking for new and improved ways of doing things.
- Perform miscellaneous functions that emerge on a daily basis with kindness, willingness, and spontaneity.
Tasks:
- Order food and supplies for the department
- Arrange transportation, or assist on outings
- Prepare food for activities and clean area when completed
- Photograph events, sharing interesting events for the Beacon
- Responsible for monthly newsletter and calendar planning
- Perform computer work as required
- Help enhance the environment through seasonal and monthly decoration along with the HD
- Have an outgoing inventory of activity supplies
- Serve as an example of excellence in meeting work requirements
Tasks:
- Report for and leave work on a timely basis, completing tasks as scheduled
- Attend in-services and all necessary training
- Participate in annual performance evaluation process
- Maintain a professional conduct and pleasant, friendly attitude towards staff, tenants and visitors
- Be willing to learn and change to meet needs that arise
