Job DescriptionPosition Summary

The Youth Activities Instructor creates a safe, fun, and engaging environment for children and teens participating in YMCA programs. This position is responsible for leading age-appropriate activities—including sports, games, fitness, arts, and enrichment—that promote skill-building, confidence, and positive social interaction. Instructors serve as role models, demonstrating the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and lead youth activities that encourage participation, teamwork, and skill development.

  • Create an inclusive environment that supports social, emotional, and physical growth for all participants.

  • Ensure safety and well-being of children by following YMCA policies and maintaining close supervision.

  • Build strong, positive relationships with youth, parents/guardians, and fellow staff.

  • Encourage and model positive behavior, respect, and sportsmanship.

  • Assist with program setup, cleanup, and upkeep of equipment and facilities.

  • Attend required staff meetings and complete ongoing YMCA trainings.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age: 16+ (may vary by YMCA policy).

  • Previous experience working with youth in a group setting preferred.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to adapt activities for different ages and abilities.

  • CPR, First Aid, and Child Abuse Prevention certifications (or willingness to obtain within 60 days of hire).

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Ability to actively participate in physical activities (running, bending, lifting light equipment).

  • Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends as program needs require.
