POSITION SUMMARY:
WIC staff perform a variety of professional duties for the Women, Infants and Children Program. WIC program staff are guided by a thorough knowledge of our Local Agency Policies and Procedures, applicable United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) federal laws and regulations, the policies, and procedures of the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). As well as our sponsor agency Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center’s (JPA FHC) policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. The Nutrition and Breastfeeding Coordinator serves as a key leadership member within the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program, responsible for managing, coordinating and enhancing the nutrition and breastfeeding services within the WIC Program. This position oversees a team of Nutritionists and a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services through staff training, supervision, performance evaluations, and program development. The Nutrition and Breastfeeding Coordinator also plays a key role in policy implementation, quality assurance, event planning, and community outreach.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Core Program Knowledge and Professional Standards
- Demonstrates a high level of understanding and commitment to WIC’s mission, program goals, policies, and procedures.
- Adheres to all regulations of confidentiality and participant safety as required by federal HIPAA regulations, USDA, the NYSDOH and JPA FHC.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of WIC program requirements, benefits and eligibility criteria.
- Attends conferences, professional seminars, in-service trainings, completes NYSDOH/ JPA FHC mandatory trainings and yearly continuing education credit requirements as assigned.
Leadership and Program Support
- Assists in standardizing program operations across different WIC sites, acting as a site manager to maintain consistency and program integrity.
- Assists in planning, implementing and evaluating WIC services to ensure compliance with NYS Department of Health WIC policies and guidelines.
- Represents the WIC program at internal and external meetings as needed.
- Serves as a backup Breastfeeding Expert as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) and Qualified Nutritionist (QN) as needed and helps manage site operations across multiple locations.
- Manages and maintains the breast pump inventory in accordance with state guidelines, staying informed on current models and participant preferences.
- Maintains and ensures the cleanliness, accessibility and welcoming environment of breastfeeding rooms at each WIC site.
Supervision, Training and Staff Development
- Directly supervises and evaluates WIC Qualified Nutritionist and Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, providing guidance, and performance feedback. Conducts annual performance reviews and state mandated quality assurance surveys.
- Coordinates daily operations and workflow to ensure efficient client services and administrative processes are followed consistently across sites. Identifies and addresses staffing needs, workflow and scheduling deficiencies with WIC Director and Assistant Director.
- Develops, implements and monitors orientation and ongoing training programs for new and existing staff in accordance with state and local agency policies.
- Maintains training documentation and ensures staff meet required competencies and certifications for both state and JPA FHC mandatory trainings with assistance from Administrative Assistant.
Communication, Meetings and Annual Events
- Assists with WIC Program’s SharePoint platform to support interdepartmental organization and access to primary documents.
- Disseminate relevant program updates, training opportunities and quality improvement initiatives to staff.
- Assists with monthly nutritionists’ staff meetings to provide updates, reinforce policies, share best practices and foster team engagement.
- Plans and manages WIC sponsored events in collaboration with WIC staff including logistics, promotion, and evaluation including but not limited to National Nutrition Month, Breastfeeding Awareness Month and Annual WIC Baby Shower.
Quality Assurance & Program Compliance & Initiatives
- Assists in monitoring program data and quality indicators to ensure compliance and efficiency.
- Supports with preparation for program audits, state site visits, and other quality assurance activities.
- Leads strategic initiatives to increase online nutrition education frequency of WIC program.
- Promotes breastfeeding initiatives across sites for improved maternal and infant outcomes.
- Collaborates with the Outreach Coordinator and community partners to expand breastfeeding and nutrition awareness in the community.
- Performs any other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in nutrition. Masters Preferred.
- Maintains active certification as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC)
- At least three (2) years of experience with WIC or a similar food assistance program.
- Supervisory experience in a clinical, community health, or administrative setting.
- Strong knowledge of maternal and child nutrition and lactation support.
- Ability to lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills resulting in the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize competing deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrates excellent presentation and public speaking skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, experience with data entry preferred.
- Familiarity with local community resources and populations served by WIC.
- Demonstrates cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse populations.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, accommodating rotation to different WIC sites based on program needs.
