The HVAC Start-Up Technician will oversee the start-up and commissioning of new HVAC installations, ensuring systems meet design intent, safety standards, and performance expectations. You’ll troubleshoot issues, calibrate controls, and document results, working closely with installers, project managers, and controls specialists.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform start-up, commissioning, and testing of commercial and industrial HVAC systems (RTUs, AHUs, VRF systems, chillers, boilers, etc.)
- Verify system operation per design documents and manufacturer guidelines
- Calibrate controls, sensors, and thermostats as required
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control issues during start-up
- Complete required start-up documentation and system performance reports
- Collaborate with installation crews, controls teams, and project managers
- Ensure all work complies with safety regulations and company standards
- Provide technical support and guidance to field teams as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- 3+ years of experience in commercial HVAC start-up, service, or commissioning
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, controls, and electrical components
- EPA Universal Certification
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and wiring diagrams
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Strong attention to detail and documentation practices
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work on-site in varying conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or trade school certification in HVAC, Mechanical, or related field
- Experience with building automation systems (BAS/BMS)
- Factory training or certifications (Trane, Carrier, Daikin, etc.)
