Maintenance Mechanic Shop Supervisor
Tri-State Tree Service seeks an experienced Shop Supervisor to lead fleet maintenance operations for our specialized arboriculture equipment including aerial lifts, chippers, stump grinders, and commercial vehicles.
While this is a supervisory position, the Maintenance Mechanic Shop Supervisor is expected to be actively involved in maintenance and repair work, regularly 'turning wrenches' alongside the team to ensure quality standards are met and to support the shop's productivity during high-volume periods.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership
Supervise mechanical technicians and maintenance staff
Assign work priorities and ensure DOT compliance standards
Provide technical training and performance evaluations
Work hands-on during peak repair periods
Equipment Operations
Direct diagnostic and repair work on commercial vehicles, processing equipment, and heavy machinery
Oversee scheduled maintenance programs using fleet management systems
Manage parts inventory and procurement for minimal downtime
Coordinate with external service providers for specialized needs
Compliance & Safety
Ensure commercial vehicles meet DOT safety requirements and inspections
Process Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs) with operators
Maintain proper documentation for all maintenance activities
Conduct regular compliance audits of service records
Administrative Duties
Monitor maintenance budgets including labor and material costs
Prepare equipment status and expenditure reports
Process and approve service invoices
Coordinate with operations team on maintenance scheduling
Required Qualifications
5+ years diesel mechanic experience
2+ years Shop Supervisor or Fleet management experience
Strong knowledge of DOT regulations and compliance
Advanced diagnostic equipment and repair skills
High school diploma; technical certification preferred
Experience with Fleetio or similar fleet management software
Excellent organizational and communication abilities
Working Conditions
Equipment maintenance facility with occasional fieldwork. Heavy equipment handling in various weather conditions. Emergency availability required during storm response periods.
