POSITION TITLE: Captain

REPORTS TO: Marine Vessel Programs Manager

SUPERVISES: Mates

EXEMPT OR NON-EXEMPT: Non-Exempt

PERCENTAGE OF PT/FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT: 100% PT role

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

The captain must ensure that the crew follows proper safety procedures and practices; make certain the boat's equipment and machinery are in working order; and be responsible for the safe loading and unloading of passengers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensures proper maintenance and operation of the vessels
  • Ensures general readiness of CMA vessels including:
    1. Fuel, oil, water, waste
    2. Safety equipment
    3. Vessel cleanliness
    4. Ensuring all proper Documentation and Placards, Manuals, Charts, Lightlists, Radio Station License, etc. are on board
    5. Any other documentation that is required of a Small Passenger Vessel
  • Will have the capability to make safety announcements on each trip and ensure proper demonstration of location and operation of safety devices.
  • Should have a pleasant personality to interface with passengers
  • Must have the ability to trailer and launch vessels using CMA approved vehicles.
  • Must be able to beach and/or anchor the passenger vessels in shallow water for snorkel and summer camp programs.
  • Make clear and appropriate weather decisions and communicate those decisions to the appropriate parties as deemed by the department Manager.
  • Other duties as required

EDUCATION/CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current USCG Master of Steam near coastal 50 ton license (minimum), 100 ton License preferred).
  • Radio Telephone operators license
  • First Aid Certification
  • CPR Certification
  • Enrolled in CMA Random Drug Testing Program
  • Ability to acquire Pinellas County School Board Photo ID card
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of small passenger vessels
  • Demonstrated ability in the operation of small passenger vessels
  • College degree preferred.
