Job Description

Job DescriptionOverview

At our Sylmar, CA site, you will orchestrate day-to-day tooling operations while advancing safety, ergonomics, and cycle time across the facility. As the Tooling Operations Supervisor, Composites & CNC, you blend technical depth with people leadership—planning, scheduling, expediting, and rolling up your sleeves to guide technicians and support tooling engineers. You also play a key role in NPI, coordinating resources and timelines across multiple projects.

A Day in the Life

Morning stand-up begins at the Tier 1 boards. You realign priorities, surface blockers, and direct resources to what matters most. You walk the floor, coach technicians through troubleshooting, and coordinate with engineering, production, and quality to resolve issues quickly. In the afternoon, you review KPIs—safety, quality, delivery, cost, and labor utilization—then brief the Tooling Manager with corrective actions and follow-ups. Throughout the day, you refine documentation, sharpen communication practices, and mentor the team to elevate capability and accountability.

What You'll Own

  • Day-to-day leadership of tooling technicians, balancing workloads and shifting priorities as needs evolve.
  • Facilitation of Tier 1 boards and daily stand-ups to track performance, escalate blockers, and align resources.
  • Reporting of safety, quality, delivery, cost, and labor KPIs to the Tooling Manager, with recommended countermeasures.
  • Hands-on, on-the-floor support—coordinating tooling engineer workflows and guiding technicians through troubleshooting.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with engineering, production, and quality to share resources and resolve issues promptly.
  • Development of technician capability through coaching, technical training, and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Labor and resource estimating using knowledge of both hard tooling (manual/CNC machining, welding) and soft tooling (fiberglass layup, epoxy, resin, composites).
  • Improvements to tooling operations, documentation standards, and communication rhythms.

What You Bring

  • 5+ years in tooling, manufacturing engineering, or related discipline.
  • 2+ years leading or supervising technical teams in a production setting.
  • Engineering degree or PMP preferred.
  • Fluency in hard tooling (manual machining, CNC machining, welding) and soft tooling (fiberglass layup, epoxy, resin, composites).
  • Experience supporting NPI programs, tooling requests, and project-based work.
  • Track record driving safety and ergonomic improvements.
  • Ability to build accountable, engaged technical teams and manage priorities.
  • Hands-on approach—assisting technicians and guiding tooling engineers.
  • Experience with KPI tracking/reporting and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Clear, timely communication to coordinate work and brief leadership.
  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM tools: SolidWorks, CATIA, MasterCAM, Siemens NX.
