Job Description

Job DescriptionThe Lehigh Valley Justice Institute at United Way GLV is a nonpartisan research, policy, and advocacy program working to develop and promote a reimagined justice system that is equitable and fair for all communities. LVJI employs a data-driven approach focused on the criminal justice processes within the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania. We believe that solutions borne in the Lehigh Valley, due to the region’s unique and diverse political, economic, and demographic climates, are portable in nature and can thus be applied to communities throughout the United States.
At LVJI, we understand you are a student and are still learning. We believe internships are opportunities to learn how to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios. We are committed to providing an internship experience that grows your skills, introduces you to the professional workforce, and bolsters your career in a nurturing environment. If you want to work on a real project, start your professional journey, and make some real change, we’d love to hear from you!

Responsibilities
The Lehigh Valley Justice Institute (LVJI) at the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley (UWGLV) is seeking Research Interns to investigate the impact of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). FQHCs are community-based health organizations that provide comprehensive primary care, dental, and behavioral health services to underserved populations in the United States. Interns will review published and unpublished academic literature on the impact of these health centers on the populations they serve and produce a set of best practices. There may be internal presentations or presentations to local committees or organizations. We are hiring 1-2 interns for this role.

We hope to answer the following research questions.

What effects do FQHCs have on underserved populations in removing barriers to care, improving mental health, or even downstream impacts on financial stability, housing security, or food security?
Do these effects differ by population? Do some groups benefit more from FQHCs than others, and if so, why?
What is the current state of FQHCs?
Can we identify any areas in the Lehigh Valley region that could benefit from an FQHC?
What are the best practices for implementing and running FQHCs?

Responsibilities:
Attend meetings with supervisors and team members
Conduct literature searches to answer the research questions
Execute basic data analysis as needed
Add/modify research questions as needed
Write a report describing research procedures, results, and interpretation
Communicate and collaborate with other interns or team members
