Occupational Therapist

Reports To: Rehabilitation Services Manager / Director of Therapy Services

Job Summary:

The Acute Rehabilitation Occupational Therapist is responsible for evaluating, planning, and implementing occupational therapy treatment programs for patients recovering from acute medical, surgical, or neurological events. This role supports patients in regaining functional independence in activities of daily living (ADLs), mobility, and cognitive function during their stay in an inpatient rehabilitation setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive assessments of patients’ physical, cognitive, and psychosocial function.

  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans focused on improving ADLs, functional mobility, strength, coordination, and safety awareness.

  • Provide interventions including therapeutic exercises, adaptive equipment training, cognitive retraining, and caregiver education.

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including physical therapists, speech therapists, nurses, case managers, and physicians to develop coordinated care plans.

  • Document patient progress and response to therapy accurately in the medical record.

  • Participate in discharge planning and recommend appropriate assistive devices or home modifications.

  • Educate patients and families on strategies for maintaining independence and preventing injury post-discharge.

  • Maintain compliance with facility policies, state licensure requirements, and professional practice standards.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Master’s or Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from an accredited institution.

  • Licensure: Current Occupational Therapist license in [State]; NBCOT certification.

  • Experience: 1+ years of experience in an acute rehab, inpatient rehab, or hospital-based setting preferred (new grads may be considered).

  • Certifications: CPR/BLS certification required.

  • Strong clinical reasoning and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage a varied caseload and prioritize effectively.

  • Proficient in using electronic health records (EHRs).
