Director Virtual Design Construction / BIM
Job Description
Use your experience as an experienced VDC professional to be lead in the development and execution of our BIM/Preconstruction Team. You are a strategic leader with deep technical expertise and a visionary approach to digital construction. With 10+ years in the industry, you have mastered the integration of BIM workflows on large-scale project delivery. You lead enterprise-level BIM strategy, mentor cross-functional teams, and drive innovation in prefabrication, coordination and digital project execution. You oversee BIM/VDC implementation across large-scale projects, ensure seamless coordination between trades, and drive digital transformation with the organization. You work with our other Director of VDC Midwest East and senior management from across the organization to create our VDC strategy and implementation plan.
Responsibilities
Virtual Design Construction Team Management:
- Responsible for helping lead firm wide strategy relative to digital project delivery supporting all projects, offices and disciplines.
- Oversee the full BIM lifecycle – from conceptual design through fabrication, installation and facilities turnover.
- Manage the overall performance of VDC Team working with our Director of VDC Midwest East. Assist in discovering talent for the team and mentor as necessary to accomplish the mission.
- Design educational offerings ranging from essentials to advanced use of Revit.
- Engage with clients, as appropriate, to develop effective and efficient workflows in the realm of BIM processes and technology ecosystems.
- Maintain active and positive relationship with vendors, consultants and advisors.
- Represent the firm at design technology conferences, functions and client coordination/design meetings.
- Design mechanisms to continuously improve the use of metadata and ai.
- Lead BIM team in the adoption and implementation to leverage data collection and query for purposes of design intelligence, optimization, automation, simulation and downstream exploration.
- Set and maintain company-wide BIM standards, QA/QC protocols, and digital construction best practices.
- Partner with executive leadership to align BIM/VDC efforts with business objectives.
- Train and mentor BIM teams, project engineers, and field personnel in advanced drywall modeling workflows.
Model Creation:
- Ability to create / manage Revit elements and optimize Revit workflows for our trade specific use
- Perform all aspects of modeling to desired level and in coordination with our internal operations teams and Estimating teams.
- Review models for accuracy and alignment with design criteria/specifications.
Model Coordination:
- Manage all of our models and coordination with federated models we interact with.
- Coordinate all BIM logistics (contracts, emails, file sharing, etc.)
- Lead interdisciplinary coordination with MEP, structural and architectural teams.
- Review and document design and coordination conflicts using Navisworks and BIM 360 / ACC Cloud.
- Run and analyze clash detection on federated models. Prepare trade specific clash detection reports to be distributed to each trade prior to coordination meetings after coordinating with internal project team for operational constructability review.
- Drive model-based prefabrication strategies and integration with Dusty Consolidated Layout.
- Spearhead the development of BIM execution plans, trade coordination schedules and QA/QC protocols.
- Evangelize, educate and support primary design applications.
- Advise project team stakeholders and extended team as appropriate through BIM project execution planning at project kickoff.
- Create and communicate clear, attainable project objectives and project requirements.
- Assist in preparing and reviewing proposals and contracts related to the projects utilizing BIM.
- Track financial performance of project.
- Ensure projects conform to contract.
- Drive the development of new business models and digital product profit and loss performance
- Lead the identification of customer needs, prioritizing features, and developing roadmaps for digital solutions.
- Ability manage trade-offs between cost, schedule, and technical dependencies to ensure a successful delivery of features to meet both internal and external customer needs.
- Identify opportunities to use model information for construction best practices and efficiencies, develop deliverables that can be utilized by our field to execute on opportunities identified
- Schedule and facilitate coordination meetings along with rest of RG project team.
- Document all coordination meeting minutes and to dos.
- Facilitate sign off and submittal of coordination areas.
Other:
- Evaluate and implement emerging technologies (digital twins, AR/VR, 4D/5D modeling, automation tools).
- Conduct risk assessments and provide constructability reviews for design documents and coordinated models.
- Ability to perform 2D drafting / shop drawings for project installations across company divisions
- Ability to facilitate the use of model information with other Autodesk software for use in the field including the importing/exporting of point clouds.
- Help execute and manage our robust Consolidated Dusty Robotics layout program. Manage the execution of this program, along with coordination of and documenting missing dimensions vis RFI.
- Understand and follow the company’s standard CAD/BIM procedures for modeling processes, and standard drawing procedures for sheet layout.
Core Competencies (Desired Skills):
- 4 year college degree with major in architecture, engineering or construction manager.
- Minimum 20+ years’ experience working as VDC professional. Ideally with experience in drywall systems, construction coordination and BIM management.
- Advanced proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, BIM360, MWF and other VDC Tools.
- Deep understanding of drywall assemblies, shop drawing production and field execution.
- Deep understanding of IPD, design-build and lean construction methodologies.
- Ability to lead cross-disciplinary coordination across trades and drive design solutions.
- Demonstrated leadership on mega-projects (healthcare, aviation, data centers or large commercial buildings)
- Master in all computer skills, ability to use, setup, manage the complete Autodesk Suite inclusive of Revit, Glue, Autocad, Navisworks, Recap Pro, Autocad Architecture, BIM 360, ACC Cloud, Revit MEP, SketchUp, Bluebeam and Revit APP Store, Synchro, Resolve, Bexel.
- Creativity for drawing and detailing using AutoCad software
· Knowledge of standard drafting procedures and practices, and adaptable to company standard procedures and practices.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
- Strong communication skills with customers and fellow employees need to be able to collaborate.
- Strong negotiation and bargaining skills needed for preconstruction coordination meetings.
