Job Description**Job Summary

**

The Optical Engineering Scientist is crucial for the execution of development and production efforts. This is a hands-on role and includes hardware integration, testing and final reports.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

**

  • Develops, oversees and coordinates alignment, test and integration of laser and optical systems.

  • Keeps costs within the allocated budget, proactively identifying cost and technical risks.

  • Technical input for proposals in support of Business Development and Engineering teams.

  • Estimate resource and material needs for project/product as it relates to the planned tasks.

  • Support other functional areas to include recommendations for testing and production

  • Interface with optical vendors providing technical documentation and guidance as needed for them to supply their components to meet system requirements

  • Coordinate production transition / hand off to operations and quality efforts

  • Provide recommendations on investments to improve operational efficiencies in the engineering organization

  • Assist with technical roadmap development

  • Support hands on integration and testing of complex subsystems across all interfaces

  • Occasional travel, domestic and international, to customer and supplier sites and other IMS locations as needed.

**REQUIRED CAPABILITIES

**

  • U.S. Citizenship required due to government contract requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Strong project management skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well within and outside of the organization with customers, vendors and leadership with minimal oversight

  • Ability to work in a fast paced, small team environment

  • Ability to effectively communicate and transfer system architecture and design knowledge with other disciplines including software and hardware engineering, manufacturing, program management, suppliers and customers

  • Experience writing BOE’s and supporting proposals

  • Experience with Technical Supplier Management, Risk and Opportunity Management

  • Able to provide technical leadership, mentorship and guidance to a team of engineers supporting engineering analysis, architecture, trade studies and continuous improvement.

  • Action and result oriented.

  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and to tight deadlines.

  • Willingness to take on project ownership and accountability.

**EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE

**

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 12 years or Graduate degree and minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience

  • 10+ years of Optical Test experience in a DoD laser environment

  • 10+ years’ experience writing technical documentation and developing analysis and reports

  • 10+ years of Laser / Optical engineering experience

  • Proficient with standard engineering software

  • Experience with best practices for optical engineering and program execution and managing multi-discipline programs
