Terran Orbital is seeking an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to join our growing team. Reporting to the Sr. Product Director, GNC Sensor Modules, the Principal Electrical Engineer will work within a multidisciplinary team to develop and support the design, prototype, qualification and sustainment of innovative components and modules for various spacecraft.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of components and modules, focusing on power electronics, motor control, and communications electronics.
  • Utilize the full spectrum of design, analysis, test, and manufacturing tools to assess electrical components and create PCBA sub-assemblies.
  • Design and optimize power electronics circuits, including DC-DC converters, motor drivers, and power management systems.
  • Conduct simulations and analyses to validate design performance and reliability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, software developers, and system engineers, to ensure seamless integration of GNC modules.
  • Perform hands-on testing, debugging, and validation of prototypes and final products.
  • Prepare detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and reports.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies to drive innovation in module development.
  • Generate technical content in support of internal and external design reviews.
  • Provide input on design timelines and cost estimates for new programs and initiatives.
  • Review design analyses, models, drawings, and associated component and module design documentation for workmanship and accuracy.
  • Manage and lead simultaneous project tasks ensuring that design deliverables, estimated spend and delivery milestones are met.
  • Provide technical expertise, guidance, and direction to the project team.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to Jr. Engineers on Industry Best Practices and Methods.
  • Contribute to Process Development and Continuous Improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in power electronics, motor control design, and/or communications electronics design.
  • Proficient in the use of standard test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, multimeters, and logic analyzers.
  • Proven experience with the design and development of reaction wheel systems or similar precision motor control systems.
  • Proficient with performing board level bring up and developing design verification and test requirements.
  • Strong proficiency in simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, SPICE, or equivalent.
  • Hands on experience with high voltage circuit analysis, troubleshooting and Root Cause Corrective Action investigations related to Power PCBA’s.
  • Proficient knowledge of standard data bus peripherals (I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Canbus).
  • Familiarity with schematic and PCB design software (e.g., Altium).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of military, automative grade, and other industry standard EEE components.
  • U.S. Citizenship with ability to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance.

Additional Differentiators

  • Proficiency with EMI/EMC mitigation strategies, industry standards and requirements.
  • Proficient with PCBA rework and surface mount technology.
  • Understanding of radiation mitigation strategies for electrical systems.
  • Experience working with related space and/or aerospace applications.
  • Experience with Conformal Coating and Tin Whisker mitigation strategies utilized for space applications.

Salary Range $175,000-$220,000

Your actual level and base salary will be determined case-by-case and may vary based on the job-related qualification, knowledge, skills, education, and experience. Physical Demands

An employee must meet the physical demands described to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. In performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely required to sit or stand for long durations of time, in addition to bending, reaching, and walking. This would require the ability to lift or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds. This position is generally sedentary, with substantial computer usage.

Work Environment

The job operates in a professional office environment but in a manufacturing company. This job routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and scanners.
