Job DescriptionIndustrial Painter/Blaster
An Industrial Painter/Blaster is responsible for preparing and coating metal parts, equipment, and structural components according to project specifications. The role includes surface preparation, abrasive blasting, paint mixing, and application using various industrial coating methods.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform abrasive blasting using sand, steel grit, or other media to remove rust, scale, coatings, and contaminants.
- Prepare surfaces by cleaning, degreasing, and masking areas as required.
- Mix and apply primers, epoxies, urethanes, and other industrial coatings to specified thickness (mil readings).
- Operate spray guns, pressure pots, blast pots, and related coating equipment.
- Set up and adjust equipment and nozzles for proper spray patterns and coverage.
- Read and follow work orders, paint specifications, safety data sheets (SDS), and quality standards.
- Use wet mil and dry mil gauges to ensure proper coating thickness.
- Inspect finished surfaces for defects and perform touch-ups or rework as needed.
- Maintain blast room, paint booth, and equipment, including cleaning guns and hoses.
- Follow safety procedures related to respirators, PPE, ventilation, and handling hazardous materials.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Ability to identify surface preparation requirements and coating systems.
- Experience with airless and conventional spray systems.
- Knowledge of abrasive blasting techniques and nozzle control.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders and specifications.
- Comfortable wearing respirators and working in confined or ventilated areas.
- Able to lift heavy materials and stand for extended periods.
Typical Experience
- Prior experience in industrial blasting and painting environments such as fabrication shops, refineries, structural steel, or heavy equipment.
- Familiarity with epoxy coatings, zinc primers, urethanes, and multi-coat systems.
