OUTSIDE MACHINIST I

SUMMARY: Must possess a basic level of knowledge, skills, and abilities, while under supervision, to perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, inspections, installation, and repairs on various equipment and systems, onboard navy vessels, on job sites, and in the workshop.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Basic knowledge of and ability to learn to read blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications.
  • Ability to remove, repair, overhaul, and align equipment associated with auxiliary systems such as condensers, compressors, pumps, forced draft blowers, main feed pumps, various types of valves, machine shop equipment, galley, and laundry equipment.
  • Duties may involve pipe fitting, boiler installation/repair, insulating, welding, machining, mechanical and electrical repairs, carpentry and building repair.
  • Can work effectively on a wide range of machinery/systems, while identifying good work practices as well as work ethic; also, is capable of leading, organizing, instructing, and assigning other individuals to perform these same activities and practices.
  • Basic level of knowledge and understanding of using a broad range of shipboard machinery and tools as needed for inspection, disassembly, reassembly, installation, repair, and diagnosis/testing requirements and procedures.
  • Identify and use most power tools (grinders, reciprocating saws, drills), hand tools (hammers, clamps, punches), and layout tools (micrometers, calipers, scribes).
  • Ability to read measuring devices (rulers/tape, levels, bobs, squares, micrometers etc.) Confirms finished work is checked for quality, prior to job being signed off.

· Performs duties as deemed necessary by supervisor/foreman.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

· No direct supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· High school diploma or GED required and 2 to 4 years of related experience or equivalent of training and experience in field.

· Tech/Trade school certification preferred.

REQUIREMENTS:

· Ability to obtain job specific training/certifications, as required. (OSHA 10 maritime, Firewatch, Etc.)

· Must pass drug test and background check, and any job specific medical screening, as required.

· Ability to gain access to military/government installations.

· Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime, as required to meet job demands/requirements.
